Woven no.8
Kapur / Seagrass
24 x 20 x 16 in

To be professional is to hold one’s work neutrally, but it is unavoidable that there are some pieces we become attached to. For me, this is one of them.

Some of you may know that in these explorations, I have been hunting for a good woven form to integrate into our everyday production. Form must be pleasant. Structure must be lightweight and durable. Construction should be between easy and intermediate. Pricing should go under RM400. This is so apprentices in both carpentry and weaving can be set upon developing skill while making good living. We are trying to not only teach for free, but pay you to learn. Cost to learn is a fundamental obstacle to class mobility. Price for consumers are controlled at a reasonably accessible level.

Hemp prices doubled for us in the last year, and so some transition has been warranted.

I’ve had seagrass in the shop for a while, but was wary of pairing with wood until now, where I happened to integrate a live wood piece with the same colouration.

In the same vein, I’ve had scavenged live wood pieces drying in the shop for the past year and a half.It is strikingly uncommon to see wood worked in it’s organic form. I wish it was done more; when the grain is intact, it can be made into stronger and thinner components. It is not done often as it is tremendously difficult, and must be done by hand. I was happy to finally try that out here.

Sometimes ingredients take time to come together. This is the same with the intended vision of the shop (and the shelter before this).

This R&D piece is available for sale at RM2,200. I appreciate everyone’s continued support.
