Craft Coffee Table

Labour hours: 10 Hours
Craftperson: Chern
Two vernacular coffee tables. Both thinking about tension and gap, hold(ing) a space. Side by side relating sewn fibres of seagrass and long grain of wood. Like in the japanese woodworking tradition, exposed joinery demonstrates the precision of the maker, and comforts the user with visible proof of durability and skill. However, in form, these tables utilise Malaysian / Indonesian motifs — such as the horn shaped runner and the leg post mimicking Kampung houses — albeit with a more contemporary feel.
1. The seagrass was the first prototype. A little gappy in one of the mortise but totally sound. Gouged along the winding grains to emphasise the lines and create texture.
2. The butterfly key table has a brighter red tone in the table top. It was better constructed as the second.
Further production of these in Kapur will be on hold until next year, so these will be the only two for now. Future pieces will not have threading nor butterfly keys; just plain planks on top. The secret third one I am taking home.
